Should atheists go to church events?

I have the opportunity to go to a church BBQ tomorrow and although I am an atheist, I'm not one to pass up free, tasty food. I thought, hey what's the harm, I have no intention to be preached at or converted. But then I thought, am I betraying my strong belief that religion is a deeply flawed and immoral institution. I don't want to be seen condoning or supporting Christianity with my attendance. I'm a young adult and don't want to give impressionable kids the wrong idea. Am I over-thinking it? Should I just smile politely and mom the food?
