Question about the book Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins?

I just finished the book and it was wonderful. But I have one question. I am a bit confused of why some of the other tributes agreed to Haymitch and got themselves killed just to save Katniss and Peeta? I would think they would care about nothing but winning. Even Finnick and Johanna agreed, but they lived. I don't understand. Please help.
