In your opinion, is it immoral to kill something that IS NOT sentient?

I try to kill as little as possible. I come from a culture where the killing of cows, chickens, fish and pigs is acceptable for food, and I suppose I'm desensitized to it, but I'd probably become a vegetarian if I had to do the killing myself.
