Can animators work at home? Like, they get hired but they don't have to go to the place of the job?

I am planning to become a computer animator (digital arts, cartoonist, that sort of thing...) and I'm wondering... since animators always work with a computer these days... can an animator work at home? Like, make projects and send these projects by email or whatever to their bosses/other coworkers? Or do they HAVE to be at the place of the job in order to work?
